Abstract
What does "Zydowska Polskosc" (Jewish Polishness) mean to academics and the broader public and how has the concept changed since it's coinage by Jakub Appenszlak nearly a century ago? So many discussions about Jewish history in the Polish lands hinge on the issue of belonging and, thus, one's interpretation of Jewish Polishness complicates any discussion about "Poles", "Jews", coexistence, anti-semitism, violence, and identity fusion. Using "Zydowska Polskosc" as a historiographical starting point, this panel will discuss ideas about Polishness, Jewishness, their intersections and their divergences across historical time and reflect on how "Zydowska Polskosc" continues to animate discussions and debates today.
