Abstract
Individua]s with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit deficits in social communication. These deficits impact many aspects of one's life: social relationships, vocational opportunities, and self-advocacy skills. Social communication is a skill explicitly taught to young children with ASD, but instruction is often needed throughout life. When an older student with ASD is communicating with a non-disabled peer, it is difficult to give immediate feedback or verbal support without the obvious interference or presence of an adult. The interference of an adult can be embarrassing and stigmatizing to the individual with ASD. Covert Audio Coaching (CAC) is a method that can be combined with other instructional strategies to teach conversational ski11s to adolescents and adults within a natural environment.
