Abstract
Technology is present in the classroom and teachers have access to technology to teach. This paper examines the use of technology in a third grade classroom as a tool to encourage students to respond in writing to math questions. The study asked two questions: would students respond more on a blog than their workbooks, and would academic language be used more in the blog responses than the workbook responses. The purpose of this study was to determine if using technology would be enough of a motivator to engage students and get them to respond in writing to math questions. An unintended outcome was the sense of community developed by the students through the use of a classroom blog and ownership of online writing.
