Abstract
As a result of high stakes testing and new educational reforms, 21st century instruction must prepare students to show mastery of academic skills required for higher learning in both standardized tests and in course work. A skill of significant importance is the ability to write well. Through highly structured instruction, the Mccurtis-Bell Shaping Guide simplifies the very complex process of effective writing, and provides a step-by-step approach to writing a five-paragraph response to literature essay. The guide offers support to all students, with a particular emphasis on struggling writers.
