Abstract
Background: At-home mole checks are effective at improving survival of patients diagnosed with melanoma; however, they are only as good as the knowledge that patients have in conducting them. While campaigns have emphasized the signs of melanoma, public understanding of these and aptitude in conducting checks have not been previously explored in a meaningful capacity. This survey aims to ascertain patient knowledge of conducting mole checks to determine pitfalls in patient education. Methods: We surveyed 243 respondents regarding their knowledge and experience regarding at-home mole checks. We analyzed responses overall, by age (18-39 years of age vs 40 and older), gender, race, and history of dermatologic condition.
