Abstract
The purpose of this study and project is to demonstrate Culturally Responsive Teaching as a support to student achievement for the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards. The instructional practices of Culturally Responsive Teaching can be connected to the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards to improve the success rate of students from diverse backgrounds. The researcher demonstrates that Project Based Learning offers an optimal format for implementing lessons that incorporate Culturally Responsive Teaching principles while supporting English Language Arts Common Core State Standards. Project Based Learning lesson plans are included as exemplars of this project. The researcher suggests that Project Based Learning helps students meet Common Core State Standards and that Culturally Responsive Teaching promotes student engagement and achievement.
